Thanks to everyone that attended the quarterly Tourism Bay of Plenty Industry Function at Omanu Golf Club on 24 April. Over thirty people attended the event, which provided an opportunity for the industry to hear an update on Tourism Bay of Plenty’s activities, future projects and a chance to network with other operators. A big thanks to Barry and his team at Omanu Golf Club for providing such a great venue. Rhys Arrowsmith has been appointed as the new General Manager of Tourism Bay of Plenty. Rhys is a Bay of Plenty local and was the former Business Development Manager at Rotorua Airport. Tourism Bay of Plenty’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Tania Bui as a new trustee. Tania has an extensive background in sales, marketing and strategic planning in a wide range of sectors, including tourism. Tania's career covers many of New Zealand's largest corporates and multinationals including Air New Zealand, Loreal, Mars International, Telecom and ZESPRI. She has also owned her own marketing and design agency, which she successfully sold in 2010 - enabling her and her family to move to Tauranga. In between her consulting work, Tania is an avid surfer, mum to a busy 4 year old and is a partner in her husband's business. Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand (TRENZ) is New Zealand’s largest annual international tourism business event. TRENZ 2012 will be held at the Queenstown Events Centre from 7 - 10 May 2012. TRENZ brings together around 260 New Zealand tourism operators and a similar number of international travel and tourism buyers for three days of focused business-to-business activity. Rhys Arrowsmith and Trudi Peet (Tourism Bay of Plenty) will be attending TRENZ this year on behalf of Bay of Plenty tourism operators.
Commercial guest nights in the coastal Bay of Plenty decreased by 1.9 percent in February 2012 compared with February 2011, according to the Commercial Accommodation figures from Statistics New Zealand. Overall, New Zealand experienced a 2 percent decrease, with Wanaka recording the largest decrease of 25.4 percent. Highlights for February 2012 are: • Guest nights down 1.9 percent to 96,979 • International guest nights down 16.9 percent to 26,111 • Domestic guest nights up 5.1 percent to 70,868 • Overall occupancy rate fell from 37.8 percent to 36.3 percent • The occupancy rate, excluding holiday parks, was 51.8 percent

Mataatua is a new world-class visitor experience and conference facility based out of Whakatane’s Te Manuka Tutahi Marae. The centrepiece of the complex is the hugely historic Mataatua Wharenui, which was originally built by the Ngati Awa tribe of Whakatane in the 1870s. It was acquired by the New Zealand Government and has travelled to international exhibitions around the world. The Wharenui was returned to Ngati Awa in 1996 and (after years of painstaking restoration) now stands majestically on its original site. For more information visit www.mataatua.com.
The Bay of Plenty Convention Bureau will be attending MEETINGS 2012, along with ten local conference and incentive operators. It is being held at the Skycity Auckland Convention Centre from 13-14 June. MEETINGS is New Zealand’s only national business tourism event for the conference, meeting, event, exhibition and incentive travel industry. The next Convention Bureau meeting will be held at Baypark.
